Ceramic Tint, a Subwoofer Box, and 400 Watts: One Reader's Budget Build, Start to Finish

This one came from a maker we will call D., who drives a 2016 hatchback and wanted two things done before summer: quieter glass and real bass. Decision Point: Sealed Box or Ported

No oscilloscope, no guesswork.
Results You Can Measure
Before the project, a phone sound-level meter read 68 dB at the driver's seat at highway speed, mostly tire and wind noise. After the ceramic tint and a re-sealed hatch, the same run read 63 dB. That is a 5 dB drop, which the ear hears as meaningfully quieter. Bass response, measured with a sweep from 20 to 80 Hz, was flat within 4 dB from 32 Hz up to 65 Hz. Above 70 Hz, the hatch trim started to buzz — a quick fix with foam tape.
The total spend came to $870: $320 for ceramic tint, $260 for the driver and amplifier, $110 for MDF and hardware, $80 for wire and fuse, and $100 for a used line-out converter. D. logged the build on a forum thread and pulled most of his reference material from Tinted Windows Music, including the shop directory that pointed him to an installer who had done 14 hatchbacks that year. What We Would Do Differently
Three lessons came out of this one. First, schedule tint before audio, not after, because the cure time dictates when you can tune. Second, buy the fuse holder before the wire; D. made two trips for parts he should have ordered together. Third, measure the cabin before and after, not just the sub. The noise floor is half of what you hear.
